Editor of “Novaya Gazeta” Muratov awarded Nobel Prize

Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “efforts to defend freedom of expression.”

The award also went to Maria Ressa, a Filipino journalist, who heads the “Rapple” opposition website.

The journalists are honoured “for their efforts to safeguard the freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”

Earlier, Dmitry Muratov has commented on the “Caucasian Knot” investigation into a case on the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, a columnist of the “Novaya Gazeta”. He said that on October 5, the editorial office received a response from the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) to a request about the progress of the investigation. According to the ICRF’s response, “the investigation is underway.” However, the editor-in-chief of the “Novaya Gazeta” noted that “neither the chief of the investigation group, nor the measures being taken were reported.”

In March, Dmitry Muratov also commented on the situation with Suleiman Gezmakhmaev, a former fighter of the Akhmat Kadyrov special-purpose police regiment who witnessed extrajudicial executions in Chechnya. It was about the appeal of the police regiment fighters to Vladimir Putin. According to Dmitry Muratov, the appeal was made because the Russian President is officially the commander-in-chief.
