Village in Abkhazia attacked by grenade launchers from Georgian territory

The village of Vtoroye Otobaya of the Galskiy District, Abhazia, located in the close vicinity of the Georgian-Abkhazian border was shelled by grenade launchers from the adjacent territory of Georgia. It happened on Thursday, April 12, at 5:30 p.m. Moscow time. Ruslan Kishmariya, Abkhazian president's plenipotentiary envoy in the Galskiy District, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about it.

In Mr. Kishmariya's words, several shells exploded not far from the post of Abkhazian frontier guards located in this village. None of local residents suffered.

Envoy Kishmariya reported that about 15 shells were sent, but not all of them reached the village. "The range of these grenades is 1.7 km, it means that they were shot deep from the territory of the Zugdidi District of Georgia," he said. Kishmariya treated the incident as a provocation.

Today, the scene of the incident will be visited both by experts from Abkhazia and representatives of the CIS peacemaking forces and UN Mission of Military Observers. According to the data at Kishmariya's disposal, the armed formations of Georgia deployed in the neighbouring Zugdidi District were brought to advance alert status and accommodated in barracks.
