Gadaev’s whereabouts still unknown after his detention in Novy Urengoy

An advocate and human rights defenders are not aware of the whereabouts of Magomed Gadaev, who was handed over to Chechen law enforcers in Novy Urengoy a day ago, reports today Oleg Orlov, a member of the Council of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”*.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that yesterday, in Novy Urengoy, the police handed over Magomed Gadaev to Chechen law enforcers, who took him away to Chechnya in connection with a criminal case on keeping of weapons. Advocate Semyon Tsvetkov was not allowed to accompany his client, reported human rights defender Oleg Orlov. He did not rule out that the case on a hiding with weapons could be fabricated in Chechnya.

Magomed Gadaev, 37, who left Russia in 2010, is a witness in a criminal case brought against Chechen law enforcers under the articles "Kidnapping" and "Exceeding Official Powers", which is still being investigated, the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper reported earlier. In Chechnya, Gadaev had been kidnapped, kept at some Chechen power body, from where he managed to get out and go abroad.

Today, Oleg Orlov, a member of the Council of the HRC “Memorial”*, has informed the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent that neither the advocate nor the human rights defenders are aware of the current whereabouts of Magomed Gadaev. “This is not a simple case. And this is an alarming fact. We do not know what is happening with Gadaev and where he is now,” Oleg Orlov said. He also added that advocate Semyon Tsvetkov had no chances to leave for Chechnya at the moment.

The detention of Magomed Gadaev in Novy Urengoy looked more like a kidnapping, the human rights defender noted.
