Protest action in Tbilisi turns into detentions

Today, opposition supporters went out to a protest action in Tbilisi demanding the release of political prisoners and hold repeated parliamentary elections. Protesters tried to block the road, after which law enforcers detained seven of them.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 25, 2020, activists who disagreed with the election outcomes set up tents near the parliament building for a round-the-clock protest action. On February 23, the police conducted a special operation in Tbilisi aimed at detaining Nika Meliya, the leader of the oppositional "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, after which protests in Georgia have intensified.

Today, in Tbilisi, at a protest action, the police detained seven persons; skirmishes and clashes break out of law enforcers with protesters, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel has reported on its website today, citing the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

The action is on in Tbilisi in Chitadze Street, near the parliament building. Its participants clash with policemen. Thus, law enforcers would not allow the protesters to block the road, which was the reason for clashes, the Georgian Channel One has explained on its website today.
