Kadyrov approved as Chechen president

Today, the Parliament of Chechnya has approved awarding Ramzan Kadyrov with the powers of the president of the Republic. Overall, 56 deputies of both Chambers has voted for this decision.

Tatiana Lokshina, chair of the Centre for contributing to civil society problem studies, qualified the appointment of Ramzan Kadyrov to the post of the president of Chechnya to be a "slap in the face" of international community. The well-known expert on human rights in Chechnya has told this today in her interview to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot."

"Same as the appointment of Kadyrov from vice-premier into a premier, his current appointment is a mere fixation of the actual reality," Alexander Cherkasov, another Chechnya expert and member of the Board of the Human Rights Centre "Memorial," asserts.

In Tatiana Lokshina's opinion, the fact that Kadyrov was so quietly appointed, despite all the criticism, indicates that Russia "is putting a final thick full stop to all the talks about Chechnya with foreign partners, and is unready not only to provide the international community of a chance to contribute to settlement of the Chechen problem, but even to discuss it."
