ECtHR awards compensation to believers for persecution in Azerbaijan
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) approved a proposal of the Azerbaijani authorities to pay 4000 euros to each of seven believers who complained about violation of their rights. Officials are trying to settle the claims lodged to the ECtHR before its verdict, since the European Court proactively awards higher compensations, lawyer Khalid Agaliev explains.
The first case is "Nidjat Panakhov and Others v. Azerbaijan". The complainants were members of the Jehovah's Witnesses religious community, including Nidjat Panakhov, Shalala Atamova, Mekhpara Djafarova, and Lala Yusifova. The believers complained about the interference of the police, violation of their rights to liberty and security of person, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion.
In the second case, Sadullakh Gendj and two other residents of Turkey – Tugrul Kyraz and Saim Samur – lodged a complaint to the ECtHR. The Muslims complained about violations of their rights to liberty and security, fair trial, and religious freedom. On April 28, 2012, they attended a religious gathering at their friend's house in the city of Ganja. The police dispersed the gathering and detained its participants.
