Dagestani SC supports father of killed shepherds

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has granted a complaint against a court's refusal to institute a case on negligence and forgery by an official against the former chief of the Shamil OVD (Interior Division), who declared the Gasanguseinov brothers as terrorists. Murtazali Gasanguseinov, a father of the killed brothers, is satisfied with the decision pronounced by the Dagestani SC.

The authorities of Dagestan are to start an investigation to punish the persons responsible for the deaths of the Gasanguseinov brothers, Instagram users believe.

The father of the killed shepherds held numerous actions of protest and succeeded in seeking the institution of a criminal case on the killing of his sons – 17-year-old Nabi and 19-year-old Gasangusein – during a special operation in August 2016. The law enforcement bodies declared the killed brothers as militants, but the brothers' parents and their fellow villagers insist that the young men were shepherds and that they were simply grazing sheep in the mountains.

If the SC recognizes the investigator's refusal to institute a criminal case as unlawful, the investigation will be resumed and there will be another attempt to bring the former police chief to justice, notes Abubakar Yangulbaev, a lawyer from the Committee against Torture (CaT).
