Amid Tskhinvali protest, MPs urge to change Constitution

In central Tskhinvali, a protest action demanding to punish those responsible for Inal Djabiev's death continues for the ninth day already. A draft amendment to the Constitution of South Ossetia in terms of the appointment and resignation of the Public Prosecutor General has been prepared, said David Sanakoev, an MP and protesters' supporter.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the indefinite protest action was launched by relatives of Inal Djabiev on December 4. The protesters demand from the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) an efficient inquiry into Djabiev's death after he had been detained by law enforcers. The authorities are trying to persuade the protesters to leave Theatre Square, promising that the inquiry will be completed within two months, but the Djabievs would not believe these promises.

Inal Djabiev was detained within the case of an attempt on the life of Igor Naniev, the Interior Minister, and died on August 28. Photos of his body with traces of severe beatings appeared on the Internet. Djabiev's death was followed by Igor Naniev's resignation, followed by resignation of the Premier, Eric Pukhaev, and the entire government.

A legislative bill has been drafted on amending the procedure for appointing the Public Prosecutor General, said David Sanakoev, a South-Ossetian MP, who supports the protest action in Theatre Square.

"Today we've drafted a bill on amending the Constitution in the part concerning the appointment and dismissal of the Public Prosecutor General. On Monday (December 14, – note of the "Caucasian Knot") we must bring it to the Parliament as a legislative initiative," the "Bonvӕrnon" Telegram channel has quoted Mr Sanakoev as saying.
