ECtHR questions effectiveness of investigation into Boris Nemtsov's murder

The Russian government should report whether the investigation into the case on the murder of Boris Nemtsov, in which natives of Chechnya were sentenced, was effective and whether the right of a politician's daughter to defence was respected, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) notes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the investigation into the case on the murder of Boris Nemtsov is formally ongoing. However, in fact, no investigative actions are underway, Vadim Prokhorov, a lawyer of the Nemtsov family, claims five years after the murder of the opposition politician.

Russian politician Boris Nemtsov was killed in the centre of Moscow on February 27, 2015. Five natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia were sentenced in the case of his assassination.

The Strasbourg Court communicated the complaint filed by Zhanna Nemtsova, a daughter of the murdered politician, about the way the murder of her father was being investigated in Russia. The ECtHR offered the parties – Zhanna Nemtsova and the Russian government – to answer, in particular, questions about whether the investigation was effective and whether the Zhanna Nemtsova's right to defence was respected, reports a document posted on the ECtHR's website today.

In her complaint, Zhanna Nemtsova wrote that investigators failed to find the motives for the murder of her father, did not interrogate well-known suspects in the case, and did not examine video records from the place of the murder.
