Muftiate of Chechnya lifts ban on Sharia weddings

The ban on marriages according to Islamic standards, introduced because of the coronavirus pandemic, has been lifted provided that no crowded weddings are held, the Mufti of Chechnya announced on May 25.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 13, because of the threat of coronavirus spread, Chechnya introduced a ban on holding weddings; clergymen were forbidden to register marriages according to Islamic standards. Residents of Chechnya complained that the ban had upset their plans.

Now, the ban is cancelled in Chechnya. Salakh Mezhiev, the Mufti of the republic announced this on May 25 on his page, as well as in the account of the Chechen Spiritual Administration of the Muslims (SAM) in the Instagram social network.

Mufti has stated, in particular, that "marriages are permitted if compliant to the requirements of 'Rospotrebnadzor'." "This concerns the creation of a family, the ceremony of marriage (Nikah)," the TASS quotes his words as translated from the Chechen language.

At the same time, the Mufti has clarified that mass and magnificent weddings are still under ban. Salakh Mezhiev has noted that only the Imam and witnesses are allowed to take part in the ceremony, the "Interfax" reports.
