Children's public apologies questioned parents' authority in Chechnya

The report with sons' apologies for rendering occult services by their parents has emphasized the exclusivity of Chechnya and reminded about Soviet practices of bringing up young people, in which the authority of power bodies competed with the parents' authority, analysts have noted.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the hunt for sorcerers in Chechnya led to the repentance of the detainees' children. Residents of Chechnya and Instagram users have found it unnecessary to involve young people in persecuting their parents.

Children's apologies for their parents are a sort of "know-how" of Chechen authorities, Mikhail Roschin, an Orientalist, believes. According to his version, children's apologies for their parents' actions are no disgrace. "The Chechen society is patriarchal; therefore, if there is no husband or grandfather in the family, then the son is considered to be the eldest," he has explained.

Aset Malsagova, a Chechen human rights defender, also believes that the son must be responsible for his mother, if there are no other men older than him in the family.

Alexei Malashenko, a political analyst, is sure that making children accountable for and obliging them to "monitor" their parents is a sort of an echo of Soviet practices in upbringing the younger generation.
