Political analysts argue about reasons for cyber attack on Georgia
The October 2019 cyber attack on Georgian agencies and media portals posed a threat to the country's security and was similar to a military attack, officials and the expert, Mamuka Zhgenti, believe. Georgia was targeted as part of standard militaries' cyber exercises, Vakhtang Maisaya, a doctor of political science, has stated in his turn.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) had blamed Russia for organizing the cyber attack committed on October 28, 2019, which was condemned by the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, Estonia and Australia. In its turn, the Russian Embassy in Washington stated that the US authorities had unreasonably accused Russia of the cyber attack on Georgia.
The large-scale cyber attack was aimed against the websites of the Georgian presidential administration, the judicial bodies, municipal councils, commercial and media entities. Photos of Mikhail Saakashvili, a former Georgian President, pictured against the country's flag with an inscription in English: "I'll be back", was posted on many of them.
The inquiry into the cyber attack took a long time, Vakhtang Gomelauri, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), said on air of the "Imedi" TV Company. According to his version, Georgia is working to improve and control the Internet space.
The cyber attack was an analogue of an attack on sea, in the air and on land, Alexei Petriashvili, a former minister for integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures, believes.
The cyber attack was a part of Russia's well-planned policy toward Georgia, Mamuka Zhgenti, an expert at the Georgian Institute of European Values, is confident. However, according to his story, a single cyber attack is not significant.
