Inquiry into death of Russian militaries in Abkhazia stopped

An armoured personnel carrier (APC) with Russian military servicemen fell into a gorge in Abkhazia due to a driver's fault, investigators have concluded. The criminal case has been stopped, because the driver was one of the three casualties of the road accident.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 18, 2019, five servicemen of the Russian base in Abkhazia fell victim to the APC's fall into a 40-meter-deep gorge. Three of them, including the driver, perished, while the remaining two were injured and operated on in Russian hospitals.

"It was established that a conscript serviceman controlled the technically sound APC. When making a turn, he lost control of the vehicle; and it tipped over into the gorge," the Military Investigation Department for the Southern Military District has informed. Investigators explained that the case was closed due to the suspect's death, the TASS has reported today.
