Irakli Shotadze approved as General Prosecutor despite protests

The Parliament of Georgia supported the appointment of Irakli Shotadze to the position of General Prosecutor of Georgia. Opposition MPs boycotted the parliament meeting.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 7, members of the Prosecutor's Council elected Irakli Shotadze as a candidate for the position of the General Prosecutor of Georgia. After that, the Prosecutor's Council submitted his candidacy for approval by the Georgian parliament.

During the secret voting in the parliament, 82 MPs supported Irakli Shotadze, and there were no objections. The parliament meeting was attended by members of only one, but the most numerous faction, the faction of the "Georgian Dream" Party. Some independent MPs also boycotted the parliament meeting.

Irakli Shotadze is to hold the position of the General Prosecutor of Georgia for six years.

On May 31, 2018, Irakli Shotadze resigned as the chief prosecutor of Georgia amid massive protest actions. The protests were provoked by an unfair, according to public activists, decision of the court, which partially acquitted two schoolchildren accused of a murder in Tbilisi. Protests against the return of Irakli Shotadze to the position of General Prosecutor took place repeatedly. So, on January 4, members of human rights organizations "Centre for Human Rights" and "Independent Lawyers" held a rally in Tbilisi.
