Chechen Instagram users express their indignation about video with beating of debtor

Users of Chechen social media found it unethical to post a video in which members of the Orstkhoi teip (family clan) were using sticks to beat their relative who did not return a debt to his creditors. Such a video can provoke relatives and other debtors to abuses, suggest residents of Chechnya.

Last night, a video of the beating was posted on Instagram public accounts "Chechnya Online" and "About Chechnya and More". "In Ingushetia, relatives punished a man for borrowing money from people and not repaying them," say both posts.

In many comments, users wrote the punishment was justifiable. "If everyone were punished in such a way, they would keep their word and repay the debt on time!" wrote, in particular, user abrek.95.3091, whose post was translated from Chechen by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

However, some users of the social network found it unacceptable to post such videos. "Why should they show that to the whole world? No shame, no conscience," wrote, in particular, user mansurkurbanov1995.

Abubakar, a member of a Chechen NGO, has expressed his concern that the posted video can provoke other creditors to take the same actions. "Members of the Tsechoi teip set a bad example, and now it can lead to a chain reaction. Others can now follow the bad example and begin to punish their own relatives in public," Abubakar told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

  • Lawyers comment on scandal with equipment sale on behalf of "Akhmat" special unit

Lawyers have noted that it is practically impossible to hold the scammers accountable for the fact that they had sold stolen property, posing themselves as fighters of the "Akhmat" Chechen special unit. But these actions have seriously discredited the "Akhmat"; and it's possible that Chechnya's enemies are behind this, a political analyst has suggested.
