Court arrests man accused of disseminating fake news about Nikol Pashinyan

The court pronounced a decision to arrest for two months a man detained for disseminating false news about the Prime Minister of Armenia. The suspect was accused of inciting hostility.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 5, agents of the National Security Service of Armenia (NSS) detained an author of a false post stating that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan allegedly congratulated the US President for a successful special operation in Iran. Social network users doubted the legal grounds for the detention.

The user of a fake page under nickname Diana Arutyunyan is accused of inciting ethnic, racial, or religious hatred and of unlawful seizure of computer information, the press service of the National Security Service of Armenia reported.

The detainee called himself an oppositionist. He has explained that he considers unfair the prosecution of Robert Kocharyan, the second president of Armenia.

Robert Kocharyan is accused of financial crimes, overthrow of the constitutional order in connection with the dispersal of protests in Yerevan in March 2008, and receipt of a large-scale bribe.
