Grozny woman finds her son in police after ten days of search

Shamkhan Khamurzaev, a resident of Grozny, whose whereabouts were unknown to his relatives since December 26, was found in the territory of the patrol-and-post service (PPS) regiment named after Akhmat Kadyrov.

The audio message of Toita, a resident of Grozny, urging to help in finding her 36-year-old son, was spread by Chechen users of the WhatsApp messenger. The woman noted that her son Shamkhan Khamurzaev, the father of three children, disappeared when he went out of home.

According to Toita, her son had never had any problems with law enforcement bodies.

In Chechnya, the practice of detaining people by law enforcers without informing their relatives is widespread; and local residents themselves often don't want to turn to the police for help finding their missing relatives, residents of Chechnya assert.

"Law enforcers can take a person away without any explanations. Relatives then spend days, weeks, or even months running around various bodies of power, trying to establish who and for what had detained the person," said one of the respondents.

"They can detain a person for any reason; and usually no one tells his/her relatives where and for what the person had been detained," another local resident has added.
