ECtHR awards nearly 6000 euros to Azerbaijani oppositionist
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has upheld the complaint of Beibala Abil, an Azerbaijani oppositionist, about violation of his right to free elections and obliged the country's authorities to pay a monetary compensation to him.
The ECtHR announced its decision on Abil's complaint on December 5. It states that the applicant had run for Azerbaijani Parliament in the 11th Garadag constituency at the elections on November 7, 2010, but his registration was cancelled.
Later, the Abil's case was considered by election commissions without his participation, while copies of the rulings thereof were issued to him with a delay, "in order to restrict his ability to appeal against them efficiently," the ECtHR has established and found a violation of his right to free elections (Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)).
The ECtHR in Strasbourg has decided that Abil deserves a compensation of 4500 euros and 1459 euros for reimbursement of his legal expenses.
