Grozny resident suspected of links with Syrian militants

A 23-year-old native of Grozny has been fighting in Syria on the side of militants since 2015, a source from the Chechen prosecutor's office has announced today the investigators' version.

According to law enforcers, Shapiaev, a resident of Grozny, born in 1996, left for Syria in 2015 to join the militants, a source from the Chechen prosecutor's office told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"According to available data, he is now in the territory of this state and is a member of one of the terrorist groupings. A criminal case has been instituted against him," the source has added.

According to law enforcers, the total number of Chechen natives who have joined the militants in Syria exceeds 700 people, the spokesman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Chechnya told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today.

"In total, we've put 724 persons on the international wanted list because of their participation in illegal armed formations (IAFs) in territories of foreign states. In 2018, 69 criminal cases were initiated on such facts," said the source.
