ECtHR upholds oppositionist's complaint against Azerbaijani govt
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found a violation of the rights of Natig Djafarli, the executive secretary of the Republican Alternative (ReAl) Party, and has ruled that compensation in the amount of 17,000 euros should be paid to him by the Azerbaijani government.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the complaint sent to the ECtHR had to do with the Natig Djafarli's arrest on August 12, 2016, and keeping him in custody for about a month.
On November 7, the ECtHR announced its decision on Natig Djafarli's complaint.
The ECtHR has found violations of Djafarli's rights under Articles 3 (prohibition of torture), 5 (right to liberty and personal immunity), 11 (right to association) and 18 (limits on the use of restrictions on one's rights) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The ECtHR in Strasbourg has ruled that Djafarli should receive compensation in the amount of 15,000 euros for his suffered moral harm, and 2000 euros more as reimbursement of his legal expenses.
Mr Djafarli himself has expressed his satisfaction with the ECtHR's decision. "It is very important that the ECtHR has recognized a violation of my rights under Article 18. This confirms the political motives for my criminal prosecution," Natig Djafarli told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
