Relatives of woman from Akhalgori request to treat her in Georgia
The authorities of South Ossetia forbade family members of local resident Tamar Gigauri, who was injured when falling into a well, to transport her to Tbilisi for medical treatment because of the closed administrative border.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 9, South Ossetia closed the border with Georgia for an indefinite period. The closure of the border checkpoints was explained by the escalation of tension by the Tbilisi authorities in connection with the arrangement of several Georgian checkpoints near the border. Local resident Margarita Martiashvili died in a clinic in Tskhinval without receiving qualified medical care in Tbilisi.
Margarita Martiashvili, a resident of the village of Ikot, suffered a blood stroke. Earlier, in such cases, doctors from Leningor called an ambulance from Georgia, which took a patient to Tbilisi within half an hour. However, because of the closure of the Razdakhan border checkpoint, the woman was denied admission to a Tbilisi clinic. At present, a patient can be hospitalized to a clinic in Tbilisi only through the mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) after coordination with the Ministry for Public Health and the government of South Ossetia. It usually takes ten days, and in the meantime, patients are taken to a hospital in Tskhinvali.
On November 3, 60-year-old Tamar Gigauri fell into a well seven meters deep and got severe injuries, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel reports as watched by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. Relatives of Tamar Gigauri tried to deliver her to Tbilisi, but she was sent to the Tskhinvali hospital.
"There are no x-ray equipment and no specialists in the Tskhinvali hospital [...] Despite the relatives requested to bring the woman to Tbilisi immediately, they were refused," said Nugzar Tinikashvili, the head of the administration of the Akhalgori municipality as quoted by the "Echo of the Caucasus".
