In Armenia, protestors against ratification of Istanbul Convention block traffic
Members of the movement "Will" organized a protest rally in front of the Armenian parliament building. Today, MPs are considering the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (also known as the Istanbul Convention). The protesters blocked an avenue for several minutes and stated that they had collected more than 50,000 signatures against the ratification.
According to the organizers, about 150 people took part in the protest action, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports. The protesters brought posters with the demands to stay away from a traditional family.
The organizers of the protest action claim that the Istanbul Convention destroys social foundations and values.
The Istanbul Convention includes extremely dangerous clauses where the definitions of "men and women" change to the definition of "partners," believes Marin Khachatryan, a former member of the Council of Elders of Yerevan. "Armenia should reject same-sex marriages, non-traditional Armenian families," said Marin Khachatryan as quoted by the "Panorama.am".
It should be noted that on October 20, in Baku, about fifty people held an action to protest against violence against women. Law enforcers took about ten young women away with them.
