ECtHR finds violation of Azerbaijani journalist's rights
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found a violation of the rights of Khyakimeldost Mekhtiev, a journalist from the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, and obliged the authorities to pay him the compensation in the amount of 2000 euros.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 10, 2011, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic (NAR) dismissed a complaint filed by Khyakimeldost Mekhtiev, a correspondent of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), against a decision of a court which found him guilty of theft of electricity.
Khyakimeldost Mekhtiev believes that he was prosecuted because of his human rights and journalistic activities. The charges were brought against him after he accompanied a journalist of the German newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" to the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.
"The compensation awarded by the ECtHR is more of symbolic nature, and it only refunds the fine I paid. However, in any case, the main thing is the confirmation that I was not guilty," Khyakimeldost Mekhtiev noted.
