Georgian transgender complains to ECtHR about refusal to change gender in documents
A transgender man, Nikolo Gviniashvili has complained to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about Georgian authorities' refusal to change his gender record in documents. To change the data on the gender in documents, they demand from Georgian transgender people to confirm the fact of changing the gender, human rights defenders report.
Gviniashvili was born a woman, but treats himself a man since childhood. Now, he has all the male's biological features, including the appearance, the NGO "Young Lawyers' Association" has noted.
"Because of the mismatch of his appearance with the gender indicated in documents, Nikolo falls victim to mockery; he had problems when contacting state and private institutions," says the NGO's statement.
Alla Parunova, an activist of the NGO "Movement for Equality", has explained that many transgender people are changing their names in documents based on the gender to which they belong. In practice, in documents, there is a mismatch of their names and surnames with the indicated gender; and they face problems, in particular, when applying for a job.
Many transgender people don't wish to change their gender surgically; they just undergo hormone therapy, as a result of which their appearance changes so that they look like the opposite sex, Ms Parunova has added.
