Nalchik residents commemorate victims in attack on the city

The Memorial Day for Perished Law Enforcers, which coincides with the anniversary of militants' attack on Nalchik, has been marked in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) with a mourning rally.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2008, by a decree of the KBR president, October 13 was declared the Memorial Day for the law enforcers who perished in performance of their duties. In October 2017, relatives of those convicted of the attack on Nalchik called it necessary for relatives of law enforcers and militants to reconcile.

On October 13, 2005, at least 250 militants launched an armed attack on Nalchik; and almost 13 to 18 targeted objects were attacked just simultaneously. In total, 35 law enforcers and 15 civilians were killed.

Zalim Kashirokov, the Minister for the Prevention of Terrorism and Extremism, has associated the marked reduction of the terrorist threat in the republic with the work of law enforcement bodies.

Khachim Shogenov, a former head of the KBR's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), has noted that militants had failed to achieve their goal: they could not capture the city, as law enforcers fought back.

The rally audience included the mother of police lieutenant colonel Anatoly Bukin, a former deputy head of the public order police of the KBR's MIA, who was killed in 2013: he was shot dead at the entrance of his house when he was returning home from service. In 2005, he was among those who repelled the attack on the KBR's MIA building.

Tosya Oitova, another participant in the rally, lost her husband in 2005.
