Georgian authorities extend dual citizenship
The deadline for preservation of the Georgian citizenship for those who received it in another country has been extended until December 31, 2020. This year, a total of 9348 people applied for the return of Georgian citizenship, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has reported.
According to the amendments to the Law on Citizenship, a Georgian citizen may have dual citizenship under certain conditions: if before receiving a new citizenship he/she receives consent of Georgian authorities to retain Georgian citizenship; if his family member is a citizen of the country, whose citizenship he receives; or he/she lives and works legally in this country for five years.
After the entry into force of the above amendments, the persons, who have obtained citizenship of another country, automatically lose the Georgian citizenship. However, this year, before August 15, 9344 people applied to the MoJ's Service Development Agency with requests to retain their Georgian citizenship, the Georgian MoJ said in its statement, translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to the statement, the decision to extend the above deadline was caused by a high number of applicants.
