The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has made its decision on the case "Khakimova et al versus Russia", obliging Russian authorities to pay compensations to relatives of seven missing residents of Chechnya.

The ECtHR's decision on the above case was posted on October 8 on the Court website. The case concerns seven men, detained by law enforcers in 2000-2003; after the detention, their relatives never saw them again.

The ECtHR found in the case violations of Articles 2 (right to life), 3 (prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment), 5 (right to freedom) and 13 (right to an efficient investigation) of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). The total amount of the compensations awarded to the applicants makes over 589,500 euros, of which 540,000 euros are compensations for the suffered moral harm. The Court has noted in its decision that the applicants' interests were represented by the NGOs "Legal Initiative" and "Chechen Mother", as well as by advocates, T. Shamsudinov and A. Magomedov.
