Woman from KBR complains about ban on calls to her husband-inmate

Lola Shomakhova, the wife of Rustam Missirov, a convicted disabled resident of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), has stated that she is unaware about her husband's condition because of the ban on calling him. She has asked the head of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) to transfer Rustam from the colony in the Omsk Region closer to the Caucasus.

On July 15, 2019, Ms Shomakhova appealed to the KBR's regional human rights centre and to the republic's Ombudsperson, stating that they were extorting money from her husband and humiliated him in the Omsk colony.

The Missirov's advocate has challenged the court ruling on tightening his client's custody regime. At the request of colony bosses, who treat Missirov as a malicious violator, he will spend two years in prison.

Lola Shomakhova has also pointed to her inability to go from the KBR to Siberia to visit her husband. During the three years of his imprisonment, I could visit him only once; and I'm still pay off my debts ... I have a small child; my husband's mother is seriously ill, and she cannot go to visit him," Ms Shomakhova wrote.
