Armenian MFA calls on Russia to remove a barrier for foreign drivers
The Russian law banning work with a driver's licence issued in Armenia is discriminatory, states Shavarsh Kocharyan, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia. The deputy head of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) called on MPs to discuss the contradictions with the rules of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
The law adopted in Russia and banning driving in the country with a foreign-issued driver's licence "essentially contradicts the agreement on the Eurasian Economic Union", states Shavarsh Kocharyan as quoted by the "News.am".
The EAEU is an economic association, an agreement on which was signed in May 2014 by the leaders of Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. The Parliament of Armenia ratified the agreement on accession to the EAEU on December 4, 2014.
According to the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia, a driver's licence issued in Armenia is not recognized in Russia if a car is used for paid work, but driver's licences issued in the rest of the EAEU countries are recognized, since the Russian language has official status in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Let us remind you that in 2017, the Speaker of the State Duma of Russia proposed to give the Russian language an official status in Armenia to secure that the country's citizens would be able to work in Russia with driver's licences issued in Armenia. The Armenian authorities do not plan to give the Russian language an official status, the National Assembly of Armenia states.
