Conference participants in Tskhinvali tell about search for missing persons

More than 130 residents of South Ossetia remain missing after the Georgian-South-Ossetian conflict. Several persons, who disappeared in 2008, were captured by Georgian law enforcers; the Georgian authorities should provide information about their fate, said Murat Djioev, the Presidential Plenipotentiary for the Post-Conflict Settlement.

The public organization named "Memory and Hope" is trying to find out the fate of 137 people from South Ossetia who disappeared in the period from 1989 to 2008.

Some missing people no longer have their living relatives; and some people, after so many years of unsuccessful searches, are reluctant to make contact, Lydia Kudzieva, the head of the organization, has stated.

Aza Bekoeva, a sister of one of the missing residents of South Ossetia, said that her brother disappeared at the age of 20.

Relatives of the missing people admit that they are tired of giving interviews about their grief. "I envy those whose relatives perished during the war. At least they know where their beloved ones are buried; they can visit their graves. And we've been waiting for so many years with one thought: 'Where to look for them?" said the woman whose husband was missing.
