Mothers of arrested Buynaksk residents threaten with protests

Relatives of Samat Tatarkhanov and Ramazan Zakaryaev, residents of Buynaksk, accused of links with militants, are planning protests to draw attention to their case.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 23, 2018, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) announced detention of four residents of the Buynaksk District, including two teenagers, on suspicion of illegal arms dealing. Samat Tatarkhanov, Daniyal Zagirov, Ramazan Zakaryaev and Ali Ramazanov were charged with organization of an illegal armed formation (IAF) and storing weapons by an organized grouping.

On May 23, 2019, rights defenders reported that all the four figurants had refused from their testimonies, referring to self-slandering under torture. The young people claimed that after their detention, they were tortured with electric current and taken to the forest, where at gunpoint they were forced to read out, to the video camera, the oath to the leader of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court.

Zumrut, the mother of Samat Tatarkhanov, visited her son on July 30 and stated that she was ready to start protests in order to draw attention to the case.

"We are ready to go on hunger strike in central Makhachkala, if the case against our sons continues in the same manner. They refuse to plead guilty and consider themselves innocent," said the woman to the "Caucasian Knot".

Zaira, the mother of Ramazan Zakaryaev, last saw her son on July 6; she is also ready to participate in protests.

According to her story, her son insists on his innocence and expects to tell the court about all the circumstances of his persecution.
