Incident with Ingush minor exposes problem of conservatism of society in Caucasus

A mother of a seven-year-old girl, beaten by an aunt in Ingushetia, said that she was not allowed to see her daughter. The tradition of leaving children in a father's family often leads to isolation of a child from society, lawyers report. In the regions of Northern Caucasus, the traditions do not always take into account the interests of a child, the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" reports.

On July 4, in Ingushetia, a seven-year-old girl was hospitalized in serious condition. The child lived in the aunt's family under guardianship. After the medical treatment, the girl will be transferred to a trouble-free family.

According to the girl's mother, she married a second time, and her former husband did not let her visit her daughter, the "Kavkaz.Realii" reports.

"The Caucasian tradition to take a child away from a mother at any cost leads to such tragedies," notes Olga Gnezdilova, a lawyer of the project "Law Initiative".

According to the lawyer, in the Caucasus, a man who does not take his child from his former wife faces condemnation of people.

Adat is a complex of the traditional legal and domestic institutions in the regions of the Islamic world.

According to the adat, in the Caucasus, after the divorce of their parents, children mostly often stay with their father's family, and if a man marries again, then with his new wife, the "Novaya Gazeta" reports.

As a result of the study conducted by the "Novaya Gazeta", it turns out that in the life of residents of the Caucasus, the law occupies "insignificant positions," while the whole life is regulated by the adat, the traditional unwritten standards.
