IS claims responsibility for attack on policeman in Chechnya

The "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization, banned in the Russian Federation by the court, claimed that a man, who attacked the police checkpoint in the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya, was its militant.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 1, during an attack on the police checkpoint in Katyr-Yurt, a policeman was killed, seconded to Chechnya from the Kemerovo Region. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), an unidentified person stabbed the policeman with a knife, threw a grenade, and was killed by return fire.

The attack on policemen in the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya became the third incident in the republic since the early 2019.

The attacker used a bayonet of a Kalashnikov submachine gun and injured the policeman, who tried to stop him, reported the law enforcement bodies. Investigation is underway to identify the terrorist and reveal the motives of his actions.

In his Telegram channel, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov blamed Western "enemies of Russia" for what happened. He noted that in Russia, "there was never a practice of attacking law enforcers with a knife."

On June 25, experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" declared that militants intensified their activities in Northern Caucasus and pointed to two armed incidents in Dagestan and Chechnya which occurred within two days.

As a result of the move to the tactics of solo attacks, the number of victims decreased, but it became more difficult for law enforcers to prevent attacks.
