Evkurov's decision to resign inspires residents of Ingushetia

Residents of Ingushetia have welcomed the news of the possible resignation of the head of the republic with fireworks and car horns.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today Yunus-Bek Evkurov has asked Vladimir Putin to dismiss him from his post of the head of Ingushetia ahead of schedule. He explained his decision by a split in the society.

Evkurov has been leading Ingushetia since 2008. On September 9, 2018, the People's Assembly of Ingushetia, by an overwhelming majority, re-elected him as the head of the republic.

Since the autumn of 2018, opponents of the border agreement with Chechnya, signed by Evkurov and Ramzan Kadyrov, have been demanding Evkurov's resignation.

Evkurov's resignation is a victory of the opposition, Yakub Gogiev, an Ingush activist and a member of the "Dzurdzuki" Historical-Geographical Society, has stated.

"Evkurov was appointed for other five years; he was appointed to stay this term until the end! But he resigned after a few months. He left under the people's pressure, because we (the majority) stood as a united wall," Mr Gogiev wrote on his Facebook page.

Part of residents of Ingushetia greeted the news of the resignation of the head of the republic with joy. Several videos from streets of Ingush cities have been posted on the Instagram – car drivers are continuously honking; some cars are travelling with Ingush flags.

"In Nazran and Magas, residents of the Republic of Ingushetia are celebrating the today's resignation of Yunus-Bek Evkurov. In streets, they shoot in the air; many car drivers are signalling, welcoming the possible resignation of the head of the region," the "Baza" Telegram channel, which has also posted a video, reports.
