Abkhazia: presidential election postponed till late August
During his talks with the opposition, President of Abkhazia Raul Khadjimba has agreed to postpone the presidential election. The voting will take place on August 25; and Aslan Bzhaniya, the leader of the opposition will be able to take part in the election.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 20, the participants of the oppositional rally in Abkhazia announced the start of civil disobedience campaign, because on May 20, the Abkhaz parliament refused to postpone the presidential election till the autumn. The opposition's request to postpone the election was caused by the illness of Aslan Bzhaniya, a presidential candidate from the opposition.
The postponement of the presidential election in Abkhazia has been reached, Teimuraz Khishba, the head of the office of the National Movement for the Protection of Abkhazian Statehood, announced at 11:30 p.m. Moscow time on May 21. After his talks with Raul Khadjimba, Mr Khishba came out to the people who gathered outside the parliament building, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports from the venue.
The talks of the united opposition and the president of Abkhazia were held right in the square with the mediation of Mirab Kishmariya, the Minister of Defence. According to Teimuraz Khishba, the talks were extremely difficult.
