Miners go on strike in Georgia

Georgian miners have come out to a protest action in the city of Chiatura, demanding an increase in wages and improved working conditions. They also called on the country's authorities to publish the results of the examination of the mines in Tkibuli, where miners died.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 16, 2018, four miners died during an accident at the Mindeli Mine in Tkibuli. Miners demanded not to close the mine. The authorities have promised to pay them for the period of downtime and restore the operation.

Since May 15, 150 miners are on strike, said Paata Samkharadze, a representative of the united trade union of Georgia. According to his story, miners receive 82 laris (approximately 30 US dollars) for one 12-hour-long shift.

The strikers are also concerned about the fate of the coal mines in the city of Tkibuli. According to their story, the authorities have not yet announced the results of the study of labour risks at these mines.
