Two "Nida" activists expelled from university in Baku

After his release from prison, Bairam Mamedov, an activist of the "Nida" movement, was not allowed to continue his studies at the Baku Slavic University. Mamedov's associate, Giyas Ibragimov, has been also expelled from the same university.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2016, Bairam Mamedov and Giyas Ibragimov were sentenced to ten years in prison each on charges of illegal drug dealing. On March 16, 2019, both activists were pardoned, but already on March 30, Mamedov was detained and arrested for 30 days for disobeying the police.

According to Mamedov himself, after release from prison in March, he tried to resume his studies. Today, he was informed that he was expelled back in 2016, after his arrest.

The activist is convinced that it was for political reasons.

Giyas Ibragimov was also expelled from the university in 2016. He believes that they continue persecuting him for political reasons.

Khalid Agaliev, a law expert, has pointed out that serving a prison term is among the cases, which allow a person to be reinstated at a university. According to his story, there are no legal obstacles for Mamedov and Ibragimov to continue their studies by at the university.
