Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan and Stavropol Territory commemorate Holocaust victims

On the Holocaust and Resistance Heroes Remembrance Day, marked on May 2, events were held in Jewish schools of Baku and Pyatigorsk, as well as mourning meetings in places of mass execution of Mountain Jews in the Stavropol Territory.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 1, in Tbilisi, there was a presentation of the documentary film "Georgian Schindler" about the Georgian-born Sergey Metreveli, who saved a group of Jews in the Stavropol Territory during World War II.

David Mordekhaev, the head of the media group of the Regional Public Charitable Foundation of Mountain Jews STMEGI, said that every year on this day events are held at Jewish schools in Baku and Pyatigorsk, and morning rallies in places of mass execution of Jews in the Stavropol Territory.

"At the events, they read prayers and express gratitude to Red Army soldiers, who liberated the region and saved the communities of Mountain Jews from extermination," he said.

Ilya Altman, a co-chairman of the "Holocaust" Scientific and Enlightenment Centre, has noted that a number of monuments to Holocaust victims were opened in the Stavropol Territory in recent years. He also emphasized the activities of the Pyatigorsk community of Mountain Jewish to perpetuate Holocaust victims in the territory.
