Resident of Chechnya sentenced for involvement in attack on Budyonnovsk

Today, the court has found Ruslan Islamov guilty of participation in the gang led by Shamil Basaev and an armed attack on Budyonnovsk in 1995 and sentenced him to 11 years of imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ruslan Islamov has been hiding from law enforcers for over 15 years thanks to a change of his surname. After his detention, he admitted his guilt and concluded a cooperation agreement with investigators, which implied a mitigated sentence. Public prosecutor requested to sentence the defendant to 10 years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony.

Ruslan Islamov was charged with a terror act, banditry, murder, and hostage taking.

"The North-Caucasian Military Court found Ruslan Islamov guilty and sentenced him to 11 years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has learned today from the press service of the North-Caucasian Military Court.

Let us remind you that on June 14, 1995, a unit of Chechen militants led by Shamil Basaev invaded the territory of the Stavropol Territory and seized the central hospital in Budyonnovsk. As a result of the terror act, 129 people were killed, and other 317 were injured. The militants released the remaining hostages in exchange for the promise of the Russian authorities to stop combat actions in Chechnya.
