Bairam Mamedov's health gets worse after his arrest, "Nida" activists report

Relatives and associates of Bairam Mamedov, an arrested activist of the movement "Nida", reported a rapid deterioration of his health state in the detention centre and demanded to immediately release him.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Bairam Mamedov was detained in Baku on March 30. The activist's father reported that his son was taken to a police station without any explanations. On the same day, Bairam Mamedov was found guilty of disobeying policemen and arrested for 30 days. On April 2, the court of appeal upheld his arrest. Meanwhile, the court ordered the Prosecutor's Office to investigate the activist's complaints about torture.

In October 2016, Bairam Mamedov, along with like-minded Giyas Ibragimov, was sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of drug dealing. Activists then treated the verdict to Mamedov and Ibragimov as revenge for the graffiti on the pedestal of the monument to Geidar Aliev in the form of inscriptions: "Qul bayramınız mübarək!" (Congratulations on slaves' holiday!) and "F ... k the system!" On March 16, 2019, by an order of the President of Azerbaijan, both activists were pardoned.

On April 7, activists of the movement "Nida" released a statement in which they reported about the health state of arrested Bairam Mamedov. According to the information from the statement, the activist got many blows to his head, and as a result, he got constant dizziness and vomiting every evening.

The activists of the movement "Nida" demanded to release Bairam Mamedov immediately. "In the detention centre, Bairam will not be able to receive quality medical care. Moreover, there is a possibility of a repetition of ill-treatment. We demand the immediate release of Bairam and his hospitalization," the activists declare in their statement.
