Russia's SC takes side of terminally ill prisoner from Dagestan
A court in the Komi Republic that refused to release a fourth-degree cancer patient Magomedsaid Gazaliev, has incorrectly interpreted the norms of the law that govern the release of prisoners, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation has stated.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2006, Gazaliev was sentenced to 16 years and 9 months in prison on charges of attempting on the life of law enforcers. The court refused to release him due to his illness. In March, Gazaliev appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
His relatives hope for an expedited consideration of his complaint because of the grave health condition of the inmate, Tatiana Okushko, an advocate, has explained.
Mardjanat Gazalieva, a sister, said that during the time of her brother's imprisonment, she had seen him only twice. During the second meeting, she noticed that he was unwell, after which doctors diagnosed him with a brain tumour.
