Circassian New Year arouses interest in Adygs' culture
The tenth official celebration of the Circassian New Year is scheduled for March 21 in Maikop, the capital of Adygea. The holiday, which was originally considered a family one, over the years united the Adygs (Circassians) and interested other nations, scientists believe.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the celebrations on the occasion of the Circassian New Year were included in the state program for the development of the culture of Adygea. They are held in Maikop on March 21, on the day of the vernal equinox.
Usually, at least 1500 people gather for a holiday, said Fatima Anchek, a deputy director of the Adygs' Folk Culture Centre.
"On March 21, an annual theatrical performance with elements of the New Year's welcoming rite is held – the ritual tree, and treating the guests of the festival with Adyg national dishes, as well as a festive concert," she said.
Aminat Soobtsokova, Deputy Minister of Culture of Adygea, has noted that this holiday is celebrated not only in Adygea, but also in Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Turkey and other countries.
The Circassian New Year was a family holiday, but now its social significance is increasing every year, said Timur Aloev, a historian.
Over 10 years of celebrations, the Circassian New Year has united the Circassians, says Asfar Kuek, a member of the Union of Circassian Organizations of Russia.
