US Embassy criticizes Armenian humanitarian mission to Syria
The US Department of State does not support any engagement with Syrian military forces, whether that engagement is to provide assistance to civilians or is military in nature, the US Embassy in Armenia declares. David Tonoyan, Armenian Defence Minister, noted the need to provide assistance to Syrian people.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 8, the Armenian mission of 83 members, including specialists for humanitarian mine clearance, medical officers, and a security team, arrived in Syria. Armenian political analysts called sending contingent a curtsey to Russia.
The US Department of State does not support any engagement with Syrian military forces, whether that engagement is to provide assistance to civilians or is military in nature, declares the US Embassy in Armenia in its statement as quoted by "aysor.am" on February 13.
Meanwhile, the statement of the US Embassy in Armenia notes that the US Department of State recognizes the desire of other nations to respond to the humanitarian situation in Syria.
Armenian Defence Minister David Tonoyan informed the edition that the humanitarian mission in Syria is carried out in accordance with the law.
"There are certain geopolitical contradictions," but Armenia is to provide assistance to the Syrian people, part of which is the Armenian community, the Minister has stated at a briefing.
"The topic cannot be a reason for speculation," David Tonoyan notes.
