Federal column attacked in Chechnya

An attack on a Russian military column was carried out in Chechnya's Kurchaloi district on 9 January. Two federal servicemen were killed and another five sustained various wounds, Radio Liberty reports. The military says the attack was organised by field commander Isa Muskiyev. His unit is currently being searched for.

On the same day, two adolescents triggered a landmine in the republic's Vedeno district. Both sustained wounds and were admitted to hospital.

Meanwhile, the Russian Internal Affairs Ministry denies information about fire on the column in Chechnya. An Interfax source in the MIA's interim press centre in the North Caucasus denies that military men were fired at in the Kurchaloi district.
