Twelve rebels killed in Nalchik

Officers of a special unit of the Federal Punishment Execution Service (FPES) have completely cleared the premises of the Kabardino-Balkar FPES Department in Nalchik, Valerii Krayev, acting First Deputy Director of the FPES, said earlier today.

Five officers of the department were killed when the rebels attacked the building, according to the FPES press service. "The attackers were divided into three groups to carry out the attack from three directions simultaneously. The attack resulted in casualties of five among officers of the department," a press release says.

Mr Krayev had previously told Interfax that there were no casualties among officers of the department.

Several dead rebels are under debris in rooms where they were able to get yesterday, according to him. "Eight bodies of destroyed rebels have been found already, and we are looking for more," Mr Krayev said. It had previously been reported that there were only two rebels in the building.

It should be noted that the rebel attack on the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria resulted in Khusein Susayev, brother of the Chechen Republic's deputy internal affairs minister, dying. This is what President Alu Alkhanov of Chechnya said. The killed man was an officer of the North Caucasus Regional Department for the Combating of Organised Crime, according to him, says RIA Novosti.

A formation of 500-600 people attacked the buildings of law enforcement and security agencies in Kabardino-Balkaria at 9.00 am on 13 October, according to Caucasian Knot's correspondent. The buildings of the Internal Affairs Ministry, Federal Security Service, and the 2nd and 3rd internal affairs divisions were fired at. Combats were under way in all districts of the city.
