Public employees and students report being forced to take part in cleaning Grozny streets

On September 15, residents of Grozny took part in the All-Russian action "General cleaning of the country". Employees of public institutions, state-financed organizations and students reported that they came to clean the city at the request of their chiefs.

Residents of Grozny told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that they learned about the action the day before it was held.

"I had to sweep the streets, paint curbs, and put the territory in order," said Kheda, an employee of a Grozny pre-school institution.

"Yesterday, we came to subbotnik. Today, we take part in an event on the occasion of the Chechen Woman's Day. Of course, all of us came by orders from our chiefs. We can say that we lost our weekend," noted Maret, an employee a Chechen public institution.

Chechnya celebrates the Chechen Woman's Day on the third Sunday of September. In 2009, the holiday was established by decree of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov "in order to strengthen the role of Chechen women in the life of society."

Students from institutions of higher and professional education institutions also reported that they came to take part in the subbotnik not on their own will.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 22, workers of rural administrations and state-financed organizations in the Grozny District complained about regular compulsory involvement in subbotniks.
