New attacks on military men in Chechnya

There were several combats between rebels and officers of law enforcement and security agencies in Chechnya last weekend.

Unknown attackers opened fire on a reconnaissance unit of a formation of the Russian Defence Ministry near Avtury, Shali district, in the afternoon on 2 October, a source with Chechnya's law enforcement agencies said. As a result, one contract serviceman was wounded and later admitted to hospital.

On the same day, two soldiers were wounded by a bomb detonating on the way of an armoured vehicle with Russian military men. One of the soldiers later died in hospital.

Another combat occurred near Kharsenoi, Shatoi district, the home village of field commander Dokku Umarov. A short clash resulted in two federal servicemen dying and another four wounded.

Two combats and two explosions were registered in the republic as of 6.00 am on 1 October, a source with Chechnya's law enforcement agencies told RIA Novosti. As a result, two officers of the Chechen Counter-terrorist Centre (CTC, the former presidential security service — ed.) were killed; wounded were two police officers, three Defence Ministry servicemen, and four CTC officers.
