Detained activist released in Azerbaijan

Detained under a dubious charge in Azerbaijan on 12 September, Said Nuri, deputy chairman of the Yeni Fikir ("New Thought") youth organisation, has been released because all deadlines to bring an official charge against him have expired. This is what his lawyer Yaver Gusein said. The lawyer remarked that his client was still at the Haematology Institute and his condition had relatively normalised. Mr Nuri had previously been delivered to the clinic in a grave condition from the temporary detention isolator where physical and moral pressure had been exerted on him.

Ramin Tagiyev, another Yeni Fikir deputy chairman who was detained yesterday, was in the evening transferred from the Grave Crimes Investigation Department at the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office to a temporary detention isolator in Baku. Both young men have been charged under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (forcible overthrow of the government).
