Young activist arrested in Azerbaijan

Said Nuriyev, Deputy Chairman of the Yeni Fikir ("New Thought") youth organisation, was detained yesterday evening. Mr Nuriyev was delivered to the Grave Crimes Investigation Department at the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office and then to a temporary detention isolator in Baku, the press service of the organisation told Caucasian Knot. Said Nuriyev was charged with "preparing a coup d'etat in Azerbaijan and receiving financial aid from forces involved therein."

Mr Nuriyev was detained as a suspect. However, in the opinion of Azeri human rights defenders, there are no reasons at all to detain Said.

Yeni Fikir leader Ruslan Bashirli was detained under a similar charge in early August.
