A man suspected of attack on Ganja Mayor was earlier wanted

Yunis Safarov, detained on suspicion of attempting to assassinate Elmar Veliev, Mayor of the Azerbaijani city of Ganja, was earlier wanted in the case of an attack on a policeman.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the evening on July 3, Elmar Veliev was wounded as a result of an armed attack. Together with the Mayor, his bodyguard was hospitalized. The shooter was detained and identified as Yunis Safarov, a resident of Ganja, born in 1983, the law enforcement bodies reported.

After the attack, Elmar Veliev in a serious condition was taken to the city clinical hospital, but then he was sent by helicopter to Baku because of his severe condition. Both wounded men are in satisfactory condition, and they receive qualified medical assistance, the agency "Interfax-Azerbaijan" reported on July 4.

According to the preliminary information, detained Yunis Safarov is a Russian citizen. He was put on the wanted list on suspicion of attacking a policeman in Ganja in 2017, when he seized a service pistol from the law enforcer, the "Report" wrote on July 4.

It has already been revealed that Elmar Veliev was shot from a Makarov pistol, the "Sputnik-Azerbaijan" reported on July 4. With reference to its sources, the edition reports that the law enforcement bodies describe Yunis Safarov as "a person inclined to support radical Islamism."
